WordCamp 2025 Speaker: Building Resilient Interfaces by Embracing Fluid Design

This year I was excited to have my talk proposal accepted and to have the opportunity to speak at WordCamp alongside some truly talented folks I’ve always looked up to in the community.

Better yet, I got to focus on a topic near and dear to my heart: using fluid/intrinsic design to build websites that empower even non-technical users.

I believe that we are on the precipice of a design shift as monumental as the introduction of responsive design. The advent of container queries and the css “:has” property together have unlocked opportunities to create truly smart components that adapt to the context of their surroundings.

Despite now being supported across virtually all browsers, I still rarely see these strategies deployed in the wild.

My hope with this talk was to inspire designers, devs, and web managers to embrace this new paradigm and the revolutionary possibilities it presents.

In the context of WordPress and the block editor, fluid design is particularly useful for delivering content manager experiences that offer incredible flexibility and reduce cognitive overload from the control panel all while writing less code!

Sound too good to be true? There certainly are still some limitations with intrinsic design, and I don’t want to claim it is a silver bullet that will fix all your issues, but it really does change the way we think about designing for the web.

I was really happy with the audience response and received lots of excellent questions both at the end of the talk, and in the hallways the following day. If you missed the talk, and this is a topic that interests you, please take a look at the replay available above. I’m extremely passionate about this topic and would love to also answer any questions you might have!
